Let’s clear the air. This is not – we repeat, not – the Ford E-Series-replacing Transit that will be built and sold in the United States next year. According to our contacts at Ford, this Tourneo Custom Concept previews what the next generation of front-wheel-drive, passenger-friendly Transits will look like when they go on sale in Europe and other world markets. The North American-spec van will be based off of the heavy-duty, rear-wheel-drive Transit that’s set to debut later this year.
So, let’s talk Tourneo. This eight-passenger van is essentially Ford’s answer to vehicles like the Renault Trafic or Volkswagen Caravelle – more butch than a minivan, with a higher ride height and more interior space. Ford says that the Tourneo Concept boasts a rich, comfortable, leather-trimmed interior with seats that can be rearranged into a number of different configurations.
Ford has only released this one image as of now, but it’s clear that the automaker’s Kinetic design has found a home on even its largest vehicles. Up front is the Blue Oval’s signature trapezoidal grille, and strong profile lines on the sides swoop upward toward the rear in an effort to make this barn-on-wheels look as fluid and sleek as possible. Under the hood, a range of 2.2-liter turbo-diesel powertrains are available, in 98-, 123- and 153-horsepower variants, all of which are mated to a six-speed manual transmission.
We’ll see the Tourneo in person in just a few weeks at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. As for the U.S.-spec Transit, it’ll be a while before that officially breaks cover. Hit the jump for all of the juicy Tourneo Concept details in Ford’s press release.

Despite tight budgets at all levels of government, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is still giving local law enforcement agencies military vehicles. According to a report in The Huffington Post, a small town in New Hampshire was set to receive an armored personnel vehicle before one local resident launched a petition drive to block the acquisition.
The Keene, NH, police department was going to get its own Lenco BearCat, a vehicle the town’s mayor reportedly described as a “tank.” However, citizens in the town of 23,000 revolted, according to the article, with nearly 100 of them packing a city council meeting in opposition. Critics said the vehicle promoted violence, and cited a promotional video for the BearCat that shows gun-wielding cops using one of the armored trucks to knock down the door of a house and spray tear gas inside. The issue is scheduled to come up again at next month’s meeting.
A $285,933 grant from DHS would pay for the eight-ton military truck. The Huffington Post cites a report from the Center for Investigative Reporting stating that $34 billion of similar grants have been issued since Sept. 11, 2001.
A Lenco spokesman criticized some of the citizens who spoke out against his firm’s vehicle, calling them “crazy” and saying, “When a Lenco Bearcat shows up at a crime scene where a suicidal killer is holding hostages, it doesn’t show up with a cannon. It shows up with a negotiator. Our trucks save lives,” according to the article.
Click past the jump to watch the Lenco BearCat promotional video, featuring AC-DC’s “Thunderstruck.”

It’s been a good long while since we visited the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot spy photography department. Our favorite snappers at CarPix were busily watching over a supplier test facility when the curiosity you see above inched its way out of hiding to perform one quick lap of the snow-covered track before retreating back from whence it came. The sign on the door clearly marks the vehicle as electric (well, “clearly” if you speak German), though details beyond that are conspicuously scarce. From the looks of things, the car has a significantly wider track up front than it does out back, though it’s difficult to say exactly what that means.
Which manufacturer is behind this machine? What kind of drivetrain does it boast? Is it actually headed for production? Is it from a major automaker or a niche proposition? The short answer is we haven’t the faintest idea. Place your bets in Comments.

Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. But most of all, give us your supercars.
There have been far too many that were never homologated for the American market, but thankfully the new McLaren MP4-12C isn’t one of them. McLaren Automotive has set up an entire network of dealers across these United States – and even one in Canada! Which is all well and fine, but ain’t worth jack if they don’t have stock.
Fortunately that’s exactly what has arrived at the Port of Baltimore and proliferated across the country. It’s enough to have us looking at what our extraneous organs would be worth on the black market, and you can see it for yourself in the video after the jump. (Pay close attention and you just might notice one passing something rather unique on Rodeo Drive.)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation concerning door fires on 2006-07 Chevrolet TrailBlazer models. The inquiry affects over 309,000 of the Chevy SUVs, with NHTSA stating that the door fires were caused by problems with the power window switches or some related electrical parts.
As of this writing, NHTSA has received 12 complaints from TrailBlazer owners about smoke or fires inside the vehicles, and thankfully, no injuries have been reported. According to The Detroit News, General Motors has stated that none of the TrailBlazers in question have been destroyed because of the fires, though some interior parts were melted and some seats were singed.
If this story sounds familiar, it’s because NHTSA recently began investigating Toyota Camry and RAV4 models for this exact same reason, with some 830,000 Toyota vehicles possibly affected. Because of this, NHTSA is looking to see if General Motors and Toyota sourced the power window switches from the same parts supplier. If that’s the case, other vehicles may be affected.
The Chevrolet TrailBlazer shares its power window switches with three other GM vehicles – the GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier and Saab 9-7X – though NHTSA has not received any complaints from owners of those vehicles, The Detroit News reports. A spokesperson from GM says these other vehicles have different door configurations, and thus, may not have any problems.
GM has said it intends to fully cooperate with NHTSA on the investigation. Of course, it’s important to note that this isn’t an official recall yet, but one may be issued pending the results of NHTSA’s inquiry. In the meantime, owners experiencing any problems should contact their local dealership.

Giedo van der Garde believes he can start exploring the potential of the Caterham CT01 when he next gets a chance in the car after a productive debut test for the team at Jerez on Thursday. The Dutchman has previous Formula 1 test experience with Spyker/Force India, Super Aguri and Renault, but prior to Jerez had not been in a car since last September’s Monza GP2 event. He said that meant the Caterham test was largely a reacclimatisation experience.

With the demise of the Lotus Elise in the United States, the Tesla Roadster’s fate was sealed. With no chassis rolling out of Hethel, Tesla had to end production of the Roadster and shift its focus to the Model S and the just-revealed Model X.
But some kind of Roadster successor has always been in the cards and as Tesla’s SEC filings revealed two years ago, the new sports car was supposed to arrive next year. But according to Elon Musk, the release of the next Tesla Roadster could be as far as four years away. And probably longer.
Speaking with Inside Line, Musk said said that Tesla’s next project will be its “Gen 3″ electric car; a smaller, mass-market EV that will carry a more affordable price tag. Originally, this new model was going to launch in 2016, but Musk revealed that the automaker is now “thinking early 2015.”
While the escalated timeline is good for EVs, it’s not good for EV enthusiasts. According to Musk, the next Roadster won’t be out until after the Gen 3 launches, and that means Tesla won’t have another sports car until 2016 at the earliest.

Jari-Matti Latvala will take a 16.8-second lead into day two of Rally Sweden, having safely completed the Karlstad superspecial which rounded off Friday’s action. Ford driver Latvala had been in a close battle with ex-team-mate Mikko Hirvonen (Citroen) for most of the day, but as their tyres wore towards the end of the second loop, Latvala was able to pull away.

A California woman beat Honda in small-claims court last week, receiving nearly $10,000 in damages after getting lower-than-advertised fuel economy in her Civic Hybrid. Early next week, we may have a better idea of how many people intend to follow her lead.
A key deadline arrives Saturday that affects all U.S. residents who bought a Civic Hybrid between 2003 and 2009. Those owners are considered part of a class-action lawsuit regarding the fuel-economy issue – unless they opt out of the case by Saturday.
Owners who opt out will not be entitled to the expected settlement of up to $200 and a coupon off their next Honda purchase. But opting out preserves their right to go it alone in court, as Heather Peters did, and seek a more substantial payout.
In order to opt out, owners must send a certified letter to the settlement administrator postmarked no later than tomorrow. More information can be found at hchsettlement.com.
Automakers, legal experts and consumer-rights advocates are all keeping an eye on what happens in the class-action suit, both in terms of how the case is settled and how many people forgo a smaller settlement with the intent of filing individual cases.
